It was during the year preceding the new millenium that I came across this little man. 2000 was an eventful year on a number of fronts, seeing me knocked over by a truck in a minor hit-and-run whilst blading in uptown Chicago, ambling down the Mississippi in paddle steamer called the Creole Queen, or strolling down Melrose in bright sunshine while visiting a sibling in Los Angeles. My life has changed a good deal since then, as have many of my perspectives, and yet in terms of how I relate to my friends and family, I still seem to be very much the same person.

Having finally sat and passed the viva voce (oral exam) component of my Ph.D. on Monday and essentially finishing my degree at Cambridge, things will begin to change again, though perhaps less predictably so. It feels refreshing to have arrived at this stage.

In any case, I digress. Though I picked him up in New Orleans, our subject comes from the Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa, and is just a small part of a larger object that probably represents the first piece of art that I've ever bought for myself. Perhaps you can guess what it is?

I think he's adorable! The only thing I can think of is that it's part of some sort of totem pole.

Congratulations on passing your PhD too. I hope there weren't too many thesis corrections to make.

Congratulation on your PhD - no idea what this chap belongs to though. Maybe some kind of nativity scene - well, it is nearly crimbo after all?!

Im guessing its some fertility doll.

Am I right? What did I win?

Congratulations on the qualification. Best wishes for the future, I'm sure you'll have some tricky decisions to make as you plan your next steps. Good luck with them and remember that coin tossing can sometimes help.

Nice shot here as always, but no idea what it is.
