A groyne on the beach at Sandown, Isle of Wight, seen here in the ebbing tide; the whole thing will be exposed in tens of minutes to become the makeshift back support of many a beach-side picnicker.

I love the really narrow DoF here. Did you artificially narrow it? It really works.

This does look like a very narrow DOF for f5 - I really like the effect. I've been realy enjoying watching the BBC's 'Coast' programme over the last few weeks. I really need to get down to the seaside - I haven't been in ages!

Yeah, it seems artificial to me too, but it works. Love the vignetting corners too.

Glad you chaps approve; yes, as I said to David (Curly), had it been natural the focus would have been thrown out more toward the near and far distances either side of the focal point. This effect here is the equivalent of the Vaseline shot from not so long ago (minus the Vaseline), hence the odd perspective.

I'll be the odd one out here and say I don't think this DoF effect is anywhere near as effective as your other recent one. It's a strong composition and I'd have prefered it had greater dof.
Hey,
I have posted a sundew. :)

Fantastic - I'll be right over. Thanks for the opinion; I did consider a narrower DoF, but thought that it detracted from the image in light of the vignetting. There will be other opportunities!

Looks like a diffusion filter to me :)
The composition is Neat, with a capital N.

Kind of like the DOF too, although I am not too sure about the vignetting at the edges.
Always wondered what those concrete things going into the water were...

This is so interesting! while i love all the details, the lively energy in the breakers is wonderful, especially on the far right and far left of the picture. so that's what they're called - i knew they stopped sand from moving up the coast but not what their name was!

Took me a while to find the focus! But it's there. Very cool.

Alistair-
This reminds me of similar beaches right here in Chicago. You have really mastered that lens for closeups and distance! Nice. OH, and thanks so much for your comment on my site the other day!

Not 100% sure about this one, i like the contrast between the heavy vignetting and the white water, but im not sure about the depth of field effect. I think it would have worked better if the 3 posts infront of the wave were in focus and the rest blurred, thats just my opinion :-)
